This week, Mexico marks two significant holidays, offering us a chance to reflect on our rich history and celebrate our vibrant culture. On May 1st, we observe International Workers' Day, also known as Labor Day, which is a tribute to the labor movement and is recognized worldwide. Following closely is Cinco de Mayo on May 5th.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when Mexican forces defeated the French army, considered one of the most powerful in the world at the time. Despite being a significant victory, the holiday was traditionally celebrated primarily in Puebla, where the battle took place. It wasn’t until the holiday was embraced by communities in the United States that it gained widespread recognition. In the U.S., Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a broader celebration of Mexican culture and heritage.

It’s crucial to differentiate Cinco de Mayo from Mexico’s Independence Day, celebrated on September 16. This date marks "El Grito de Dolores" (The Cry of Dolores), a call to arms by priest Miguel Hidalgo in 1810 that initiated the war of independence against Spanish rule. This event is considered the most significant national patriotic holiday in Mexico. While Cinco de Mayo is celebrated with parades, music, and dancing primarily in the United States, the Cry of Dolores remains a deeply significant event in Mexico, observed with much fervor and national pride.
